Healing after the fact
For many victims of sexual assault, it can take years to finally let go of any anger, guilt, fear, or shame and truly begin the healing process. No matter how long ago the assault occurred, it’s still possible to receive life- changing help from SAVA and other organizations like it.
Nell is living proof of that. The married mother of two has a bright, friendly smile and a confident demeanor that belies any past traumas- but when she was only twelve years old, Nell was sexually assaulted by her father.
Nell tried to move past the assault, but eventually turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with her emotions. She tried several different therapies and organizations over the years, but none seemed like the right fit- until she found SAVA.
“I feel much more lighter now, much more aware, and just empowered with who I am, ” said Nell. "There was a lot of talk therapy, which was really good....and then my therapist urged me to do group therapy, which I was very, very, scared of and frightened. But now I've been able to bond with my group members on a great level...they are people I can call if I need anything, I've made strong connections with them. I didn't feel as alone going through all of this."
Thanks to the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate center’s unique approach to healing and supporting their clients, Nell is able to happily and successfully lead the life she wants to lead, knowing she has the comforting safety net of her friends, counselors, and fellow survivors at SAVA.
